Step Beyond the shore

I made this image in the autumn whilst travelling in South Africa. The day was warm and a light wind blew onshore, Far below me, the people walking on the sand could hear the same meditative sound of the sea as me, high above them.

We were driving the coastal road from Cape Town to visit a friend in Strand when we rounded a bend and this immense vista opened up before us. Someone else had stopped at the obvious viewpoint, so we drove on a little further until we found our own quiet place to stop. That detour proved to be a gift. I knew immediately that the scene—its scale, its calm, the clarity of its colours—couldn’t be held in a single frame. I switched to a 50mm lens and began taking a series of vertical shots, knowing I’d need to stitch them together to do the landscape justice. You can read more about that process here…

The sea was surprisingly still, its surface broken only by gentle waves meeting the shore. Behind it, the mountains rose in contrast—rugged, immense, a silent presence that shaped the entire horizon. The light was filtered through high cloud, softening the edges and enriching the blues and greys. I had only a few minutes, but I worked with intent. What I wanted was not just a photograph of a coastline, but a memory made visible—the magnitude of the place, the serenity in its scale, and the quiet awe it stirred in that fleeting moment.
