Elephant at dawn

I made this image at dawn on the last day of a four-day safari in South Africa’s Pilanesberg National Park. The air was warm, the light rising fast, and time was running out. For all we’d seen—lion, rhino, giraffe—we hadn’t had any close encounters with elephants. We’d only glimpsed them at a distance, their silhouettes drifting through the bush like a promise not quite kept.

We were heading back to the hotel when someone in the vehicle spotted movement on the hillside. Elephants. The guide didn’t hesitate—he knew their likely path and drove to intercept. We pulled to the roadside and waited, silent. Moments later, they emerged: a whole family group, including a baby barely taller than the grass, several adolescents, a cluster of females—and this bull. Towering, resolute, and strikingly different in colour from the rest, his hide rich with red dust, he held our attention completely.

This frame was made while they were still some distance away. I was using my RF 100–500mm lens and, in truth, the best images came before they reached us. By the time they were close, I lowered the camera. Partly to be fully present, partly to preserve the quiet. I didn’t want even the sound of a shutter to disturb the stillness of that encounter.

Looking back, this image doesn’t just document a wildlife sighting—it carries the weight of anticipation, the thrill of revelation, and a personal moment of awe. It’s one of those photographs that stays with you, long after the shutter is closed.
