Crossing the mist.

The light was slanting low, unhurried, as if reluctant to commit to day. I was at a conference, a gathering of photographers who, like me, often look too long at clouds and consider silence a friend. The air caught me. It wasn’t dramatic, not loud with sunrise or theatre. Just mist. Hanging. Settling. Waiting.

There are places that ask you to linger, and there are moments that insist. This was both.

Ahead, the bridges curved quietly over the Forth. They didn’t gleam; they didn’t need to. The water below them mirrored not the sky, but the mood — still, grey, tempered. Camera in hand, I found the frame slowly. Not with the click-hunger of a tourist, but like someone settling into conversation. There’s something almost devotional in that: standing, waiting, watching a scene breathe. You don’t take a photograph; you make it, intentionally.

I’ve passed this stretch of water more times than I can count. Always moving. Always en route to something, to somewhere. But that morning I wasn’t going anywhere. Just here. Just now. The bridges, the mist, the hush. A composition of pause.

I hope you see in this what I saw, not an object, but an atmosphere. Not a documentation, but a feeling. I’m not even sure it’s a landscape. More a conversation with light, suspended mid-sentence. The morning not yet unwrapped. The possibility in the mist. The stillness before the day begins.
